Spring is for the Birds at Cross Creek Ranch

Birdwatchers rejoice! The spring migratory season is underway bringing birds galore to Texas. Our state plays host to many different species of birds. In fact, one out of every three birds in the nation will migrate to Texas between March 1 and June 15. Flewellen Creek and the Polishing Pond in Cross Creek Ranch are favored spots for weary travelers to rest their wings. What birds can eager birdwatchers see? Grab your binoculars and take a look:

Warblers

Spring is prime time for warbler-watching. Look for brightly colored species like Yellow Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Hooded Warbler and Magnolia Warbler as they forage for insects in trees and shrubs.

Flycatchers

Migratory flycatchers begin arriving in Texas in spring. Keep an eye out for Eastern Kingbird, Great Crested Flycatcher, Eastern Phoebe and Vermilion Flycatcher as they perch on branches or wires while hunting for flying insects.

Tanagers

Species such as Scarlet Tanager and Summer Tanager brighten the landscape with their vibrant red plumage during spring migration. Look for them in wooded areas and along forest edges where they search for insects and berries.

Orioles

The Baltimore Oriole and Orchard Oriole are commonly seen in Texas during spring migration. Listen to their melodious songs as they feed on nectar, fruit and insects in trees and shrubs.

Vireos

Several vireo species pass through Texas in the spring, including Red-eyed Vireo, White-eyed Vireo and Warbling Vireo. Listen for their distinctive vocalizations as they move through the treetops.

Swallows

Swallows are a familiar sight in the skies in spring. Look for species such as Barn Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Tree Swallow and Purple Martin as they swoop and dive in search of flying insects.

Sparrows

Some sparrow species migrate through Texas before continuing north to their breeding grounds. Watch for species like White-throated Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Field Sparrow and Savannah Sparrow in grassy or shrubby habitats.

Waterfowl

While many waterfowl species migrate through Texas in fall, some species may also be observed during spring migration as they return to northern breeding grounds. Look for ducks such as Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler and Northern Pintail in wetlands and ponds.
